Bike Ride Day 6 - Muong Lay to Dien Bien Phu

Distance: 100km
Time: 3 hours

Plan change today; the owner of the hotel in Muong Lay advised us against taking the road to Tuan Giao and instead going via Dien Bien Phu (DBP). So we’re now staying the night in DBP and will be going directly to Son La in the morning. It was a nice quick drive and we got there early but we spent nearly 2 hours looking for accommodation! We seemed to be only finding expensive or dirty hotels and in the end settled on a room for about 17 dollars (expensive here) for an ok room.

It was a nice drive down and we got here quicker than expected despite a few hiccups. The first was Dan’s fault for leaving the choke on and not working out what was wrong, numpty! The next incident involved us driving into a horse; well actually the horse running into us! The horses were trotting round a blind corner on the wrong side of the road and we just managed to stop before hitting them, but one of the horses got startled and started galloping and hit the bike, knocking us over. Abby got hit in the leg but was OK and we got the bike up quickly, so luckily no harm was done all round.

No more drama after that but the bike was filthy from the mucky roads so we took it off to get cleaned and get some fresh oil put in it. We met a nice couple in DBP who needed dollars which we swapped for dong before they headed off to Lao. We had dinner together and chatted about all kinds of stuff as you do with people you’ve just met!
