Bike Ride Day 9 - Mai Chau

No driving today – yes! A well deserved rest was in order (I know it’s not work but we still need a break!).

We spent a lovely day wandering around a White Thai minority village which was within walking distance from Mai Chau. The village was very pretty. All of the houses were built on stilts, many of them selling handicrafts to foreigners who sometimes frequent the village on cycling tours.

We spent an interesting night in a homestay and slept on the floor in one of the wooden stilt houses. Our bedroom window looked out onto paddy fields and mountains in the distance. It was very scenic and we lived like a local tribal person for the night! The view was a beautiful sight to wake up to in the morning.

The only thing about staying with the locals is that you are expected to live like the locals-this meant a hard floor, lots of insects everywhere and no a/c! It was a great experience and not one that many people can say they’ve had.

We woke up to the sight of Vietnamese harvesting the rice in the paddy fields- very surreal!
